The Great
Contest for Responsible Government: The City of Toronto Poll Book of 1841
Edited by Paul J. McGrath
The election of 1841 was a rowdy affair. This election, which took place
over six days, was the first since the union of Upper and Lower Canada
under one government as Canada East and Canada West. The electors of Toronto
had to choose two representatives to the Legislative Assembly. The riding
was hotly contested by two Tory and two Reform candidates. Reformers saw
it as their opportunity to defeat the influence of the Family Compact
and achieve Responsible Government. There was no secret ballot—patronage,
intimidation and violence were all part of the experience for those exercising
their franchise. The Reformers won, but their victory parade the following
day resulted in a riot and the death of one man. An Inquiry set up to
find the causes of the riot and murder was highly critical of the police,
patronage in licensing matters and the involvement of the Orange Order
in the whole affair. This book is based on a list of electors, with
a decidedly Reform commentary, which was published soon after the “Great
Contest”. The more than 900 voters are classified by occupation,
and sometimes residence, as well as the candidates they chose. Editor
Paul McGrath added a substantial introduction
about the politics of the time, and about this election in particular
and the resulting riot and Inquiry, as well as short biographies of the
candidates, and a complete index.
